Defining “Character-Defining”

Walking around Mt. Pleasant, you will notice the distinctive features, finishes, and construction techniques that characterize the buildings and landscape of our historic district. Altering or removing these “character-defining” elements detracts from the architectural significance of the district and for that reason, according to the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, must be retained and preserved – or if they have to be replaced, must match the original in design, color, texture, and materials.
